Lost Podcast
I am pleased to say that Lost has gotten much better in these past few episodes. The show finally got its momentum back. The introduction and development of Juliet’s role has really pumped up Lost and made it even jucier. Last week when we saw her help out Sun in determining her date of conception (D.O.C. episode), we realized that Ben is somehow forcing Juliet to go along with whatever plan he has concocted. It was extra creepy when we saw her go back after the ultrasound and record her findings for Ben. It makes you wonder why they are tracking the survivors so closely and what the purpose could be.
More importantly, what was with the parachuted woman, Naomi, who fell from the sky into the jungle? She knew Desmond’s name and said that there was no way Hurley and the other survivors could possibly have been on Oceanic flight 815 since rescuers found the plane and there were no survivors. That’s extra creepy. However, although it may allude to the idea that the survivors may be in purgatory, loyal fans know that cannot be true since the writers and creators promised this would not happen.
After a little bit of confusion, I decided to log onto ABC’s website and listen to the show’s most recent podcast narrated by executive producers David Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse. They confirmed that the island is in fact not purgatory, though they fail to give much else for an explanation. Possible suggestions are that Naomi is lying (highly unlikely) or that it was all part of a conspiracy so that people would stop looking for them…though they refuse to really expand on anything they add that more will be revealed on this Wednesday night’s upcoming epside, The Brig.
The executive producers know people have been frustrated and they promise to reveal some major secrets in the next couple of episodes leading up to the finale, but of course, as expected not all of them since Lost always keeps viewers guessing even after major secrets have been revealed. We also discover from the podcast that the Other’s interest in children goes beyond women’s inability to successfully give birth to children if they are conceived on the island. Lindeloff and Cuse say that along with fertility issues, the Others are also interested in children who have”special abilities” like Walt for example. They say that is part of the reason for why the Others spent time trying to kidnap him and why they forced him to perform tests and answer so many questions.
All in all, this week’s podcast was not only entertaining, but also somewhat helpful on a small scale. I cannot wait for this week’s episode to air…only a few more left until the season finale which is sure to reveal something good that we have been hoping for all year long. Hopefully the writers will incorporate Jacob (the mysterious man with more power than Ben) into the mix and reveal what’s going on in terms of Oceanic flight 815 supposedly being found with no survivors.
Oh Juliet!
Let me start out by saying how I can’t stop thinking about the brilliance of last Wednesday’s episode….Amazing. They finally gave us a good one. Maybe all of the complaints and blogs talking about how the show was getting a little too frustrating finally paid off.
Juliet just might be one of my new favorite characters on Lost. She definitely knows how to play both sides, whether it’s acting innocent and trying to integrate with the survivors, or be Ben’s sidekick in a masterful plan that is sure to unfold in the upcoming episodes. Cross you fingers and hope that the show continues in the right direction.
The beauty of Juliet is that she has become an avenue for revealing the Others’ secrets. We were able to find out why Juliet was put on the island and one of the reasons the doctors are there. For some reason the Others’ are infertile so they have basically been using the survivors as a case study. She also revealed that Claire was purposely injected and only she could save her life. Although at the end of the episode we discover that Claire’s death scare is all a part of the plan. Hopefully when Ben says, “see you in a week,” we won’t have to wait too long for resolution as to what the plan is and why they are so obsessed with babies and children.
She also creates another dimension that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. We can see that Jack protecting her is sure to lead up to a potential romance, furthering the love triangle that already exists on the island. The writers have added Juliet into the lustful drama already taking place between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. This makes it even better since we know Juliet is dangerous and cannot be trusted by anyone on the beach.
She’s obviously willing to do whatever it takes in order to get off the island and get back to Miami with her sister. Hopefully, the writers will continue using her character as a focal point for the show. I think it was genius how they linked this past episode’s “One of us” with “One of them.” Sayid and Sawyer know better than to trust Juliet who truly is one of the Others. This quiet demure scientist has now become a hard core survivalist who gets the job done. What was great about the jungle scene with Sayid and Juliet is that he finally asked the questions everyone wants to know.
“Why are you terrorizing us? Why do you take children? And who are you?” Thanks for the bluntness Sayid.
Why it took so long for anyone to actually start asking questions is beyond me, but better late than never. All I can say is that Juliet finally put the high energy tension we like back into Lost. I can’t wait to see what she will do next week.
Confusion on Lost
I am addicted to television and will watch just about any genre, but I can honestly say that Lost is definitely one of the most creative and unique dramas out there. The show creates so much suspense and mystery, further allowing the storyline and character development to go in new directions. With that said, the past few episodes have been somewhat of a disappointment. Too many mysteries have been added without enough resolution. There’s no doubt that I still enjoy watching the show, but it has gotten frustrating with how the writers and creators have added what seems to be an endless amount of angles. It’s no wonder that ratings are down. The show is confusing enough for people that watch the show on a regular basis, so I can imagine how hard it would be to jump right in and try to watch a random episode on a Wednesday night.
This past Wednesday was a cop out episode since it basically went back and showed clips from previous episodes. It reminds me of what the writers did in many Friends episodes where they would show flashbacks of the group, rarely presenting anything new to the episode. The only difference in last Wednesday’s “Exposé” episode is that a couple small issues were brought to light. It was revealed that Nikki and Paolo were conmen who robbed an older man of his diamonds, and we learned how they lived out their 65 days on the island after the plane crash. It was also revealed that Sun was not attacked by The Others, but rather Charlie and Sawyer. Even though these issues are now resolved, it’s not what viewers are tuning in for. We want to know more about The Others, the hatches, if Jack will ever return to the beach, and what’s really going on with John Locke.
In “The Man from Tallahassee” episode which aired March 21st, we saw Jack playing a friendly game of football with The Others. Since then, little information about Jack and The Others has been mentioned. The writers also failed to divulge any information about Locke’s crazy situation. We now know that his dad was the one who pushed him out of a window and that’s how he ended up in a wheelchair. But the show created more confusion by adding his father to the show. Now, Locke’s dad has somehow made it to the island as we found out when Ben opened a mysterious closet door, telling Locke that he knows very little about the island. That is one of the craziest and weirdest mysteries to date. The writers and creators conveniently failed to address anything relating to Locke’s father last episode.
Thankfully, one exciting aspect is that there will be no more reruns this season due to fans complaining about last fall’s slew of reruns. Hopefully the show will start answering more of the mysteries and get to the good stuff. If they do, maybe their ratings will go back up again. They can’t keep dragging along the plotlines and adding more mysteries to the show forever. Message boards all over the internet are full of complaints about how the producers have failed to answer the big mysteries within the show. Others like me are frustrated that they have side stepped making any big resolutions only adding to the already confusing plot.
